How to prepare for your engagement session

I know it can be stressful and nerve racking to get in front of the camera. Knowing how to prepare for your engagement session can make a huge difference in how quickly you and your fiance are comfortable during the session. I hope this post helps you get ready for your session, because I am so excited to photograph you!

1. Go through some of my past engagement sessions on the blog.

If you take the time to look at a few past sessions, you will have an idea of what to expect when it’s time for your session. You can find all my past engagement sessions here. And if you have any questions, know that I am always happy to answer. 🙂

2. Show the favorites to your fiance so he knows what to expect.

If your fiance has an idea about what he’s getting in to, it will be easier on him during the session. I take a lot of photos, and if someone shows up thinking we are going to take five, they are not going to be happy when the session lasts an hour or two. Knowing what is expected will help your partner know how to prepare for your engagement session, and it will help the whole experience be less stressful.

3. Know that everyone feels awkward having their picture taken.

This is important. I have started several sessions where one or both parties will tell me they are not photogenic or don’t like having their picture taken. Just please trust that I am going to do everything in my power to deliver you images that you love. I have spent so much time learning about the best way to pose you in the most flattering light so that I can get you images you’ll be excited about. 🙂

4. Just because it feels weird, doesn’t mean it looks weird.

There are times I will ask you to do something, like go nose-to-nose or forehead-to-forehead, and it might feel strange. All you’re thinking is, “My partner now has cyclopes’ eye. This feels so weird. Who just stands like this?” Well, no one, but I promise you, it looks great! Another thing you need to know about how to prepare for your engagement session is that I will ask you to trust me often. Remember what I said about all the things I have learned? I always have a reason for posing you a certain way, and it’s not just to see if I can get you to do it, I promise. I want to get you photos that show how much you two love each other, and sometimes the things that feel the strangest end up photographing beautifully.
