What to wear to a Kansas City wedding – Wedding guest style guide

Knowing how to dress as a guest at a wedding doesn’t always come easily, but one way brides and grooms can help with that would be to include the attire on the invitation. I’ve included descriptions of the different attire below. Most of the weddings I’ve attended as a guest have either been casual or dressy-casual. Hopefully this helps solve that “What the heck am I going to wear?!” conundrum. 🙂

What to wear to a Kansas City wedding

Casual – But not too casual

For her: Summer sundress, skirt or pants with a nice blouse, everyday, natural makeup and hair. For him: Dress pants with a button-down shirt or polo

Semi-formal/Dressy Casual – Think “night on the town”

For her: Cocktail dress or a dressy skirt and top. For him: Suit and tie, dark for evening or light for daytime events.

Beach Formal – Breezy, comfortable and weather appropriate

Formal (tea- or knee-length) summer sundress with flat sandals, natural everyday makeup and hair. For him: Summer suit and linen shirt (no tie required), linen pants or khakis

Black Tie Optional – Dark and sophisticated

For her: Long dress, dressy suit, or formal cocktail-length dress in a dark, neutral tone (brown, gray or black). For him: Tuxedo or a formal dark suit and tie. Great places to rent: Rent the Runway and The Black Tux.

Black Tie – Basic formal

For her: Chic cocktail dress or a long evening gown in a dark, neutral color. For him: Tuxedo, black bow tie, cummerbund and patent leather shoes

White Tie – The ultimate type of formal

For her: Full-length ball gown in a neutral color; glamorous makeup and dramatic jewelry and hair are appropriate. For him: Tuxedo, long black jacket with tails, a white pique vest, bow tie, formal shoes and optional white gloves for dancing.
