The Story of Us: What it was actually like to register for our wedding – Concordia, Missouri Photographer

Registering for our wedding sounded fun initially, but no one really prepares you for how daunting and/or exhausting it can be. When we went to register, we were (for the most part) just set loose in the store. One of the places we went gave us an idea of what we should be looking for, but unless you carry that list around with you it can get a bit chaotic.

When we went to Target

We showed up at Target and just went to the service desk and said, “We’d like to register for our wedding.” Then, we were handed an iPhone with a scanner to mosey about the store and scan things at our own pace. I did enjoy how laid back everything at Target was, but as we walked around the store, we were sure what kinds of things we should be registering for.

We knew some of the basics, like kitchen gadgets, but as far as how many or what kind of things it was a bit daunting. After two hours in the store, we called it quits and decided we would edit or update the list at a later date.

Bed, Bath and Beyond overwhelming

One of the best things we did was go on two separate days. Trying to cram everything into one day would have been crazy. When we finished, we were exhausted. It’s just a lot to think about and you want to make sure everything goes well together. Bed, Bath and Beyond was a bit more serious about the registration process.

We had to sit in the little room with a consultant and set up the registry. Then, we went over how many things we needed of what – like bath towels or dinner plates. When we took off in the store, we had a scanner with us, but the list was kept with our little bag of goodies about local vendors and such that they give couples.

I would suggest asking to carry the list with you so you can remember how much you want/need of the different items.

Favorite part: You can edit the lists online

I am glad we when to register in person. There is something about being able to actually see something to add it to the registry versus only viewing it online that I like. However, now that our lists are created and we have an idea about what things look like in person, we can go online to edit our lists. This worked out really well for Bed, Bath and Beyond. When we were trying to register for towels, it wasn’t saving the number. So, when we looked at the list later, we had three towels, one hand towel and one wash cloth. Going online to correct it was much easier than deleting it by hand on the scanner.

My advice prior to registering

  1. Talk with your partner about the styles you both like. Do you want neutrals or bold colors? Are you in your forever home? Do you plan on renovating or updating the paint?
  2. Discuss things you might need. We have lived together for two years, but neither of us had a great set of pots and pans. When we went to register, we knew that was something we needed to really look into. The same can be said for a lot of our kitchen utensils. Currently, the only rolling we have is plastic and I think from the dollar bin at Target. It is not the sturdiest of rolling pins.
  3. Have a plan for the things you are replacing. Due to the fact that we have both lived alone, and then moved in together we had a lot of duplicates. That is going to happen again as we have showers and such. We are going to need to clear out some of the items we are replacing to make room for the new things. Rummage sales, donations, etc., are some good ideas to keep in mind.
  4. Be thankful. We are so grateful that a registry is even needed, that we have people in our lives who ask about such things. It is a very humbling experience.
