Five favorite things: birth photography – Concordia, Missouri Photographer

I first heard about birth photography when my cousin was pregnant with her first son and spoke about a birth photographer coming into the delivery room with her. Capturing real, candid moments, like at a birth or wedding, are honestly where I am more comfortable due to my degree. I was so blessed to have the opportunity to photograph the arrival of Cory and Mallory’s precious baby girl, and I’ve booked another birth for this summer. They are one of my favorite things to photograph, and if you’re expecting I would love to talk with you about photographing your bundle of joy’s arrival.

1. Meeting the baby

I think the best part is when momma gets to hold her baby for the first time. The look of pure joy on her face as that precious gift from God is laid upon her is just incredible, and my all-time favorite thing about birth photography. I think it’s so neat that when the baby arrives and is laid on their mother while the umbilical cord is cut.

2. The labor

I think this is the hardest part of birth photography (obviously for the mom). Making sure I’ve captured as much of the birth as possible, while also not being in the doctor’s or nurses’ way can get tricky. However, it is a challenge that I love. It forces me to be creative when composing the images and to not be afraid to move around.

3. The anticipation of the baby’s arrival

Hanging out in the delivery room with a family is a great way to bond before being a part of such an intimate moment. I love having time to speak with them as I make sure my settings are in order. It gives us a chance to get familiar (especially if we didn’t have a maternity session) and talk about any last-minute details.

4. The father’s concern and joy

I love seeing the looks of concern and pride on the father’s face as the mother works to bring that sweet babe into the world, and just the overwhelming joy when everything is all said and done. And also in this case (see the next photo), the celebrating that ensued after the birth.

5. The family’s first look

When the family gets to come in to meet the new baby for the first time is such a great moment. Everyone is so ecstatic and overjoyed to meet the newest member of their clan. It is also the babies first time meeting their village – the village of people who will be around to help shape that little babe into the person they were meant to become.
