A behind the scenes look at my continuing education – Concordia, Missouri photographer

The winter months tend to be slower – not as many clients to photograph since it is so cold outside. I like to take that time every year and find a way to better myself and my business. I made the step to change my business name and really put myself out there more. I’ve also been taking several new courses to improve my photography, editing and business practices. Continuing my education is so important to me because when we stop learning, we stop growing.

Improving my photography

This was a two-part endeavor over the last few months. One of the courses I signed up for taught me how to improve the natural interactions between the people in front of my camera. There were so many great ideas to incorporate into my sessions. The course focuses on how to make people feel relaxed and excited about their time in front of the camera instead of awkward, and I think that is so great.

The second course focused on editing, and creating a consistent style. I am so excited to deliver images that are more consistent session to session. It really focused on the importance of getting great skin tones in an image. That was probably the thing I was most excited for because it wasn’t something I realized I was lacking.

Better business practices

The same course that focused on consistent editing also talked about the importance of a consistent workflow. I am going to test this new workflow with a session I have this weekend, and I am really excited about it. It is all about delivering the photos when the client is still the most excited about them. And honestly, why wouldn’t you want to do that?

I’ve also taken some courses to improve my social media and newsletter because consistently communicating with those who follow my work is important to me. (Are you sensing a theme yet? I should note – I did win the consistency award on my high school tennis team. That applies right?) I want to be reliable and someone who my client’s will trust to take care of them.

So why am I telling you this?

I want you to know I’m so very serious about this business, about photography, and about serving you to the best of my ability. Education is a never-ending goal – there is always more to learn, a new skill to acquire. I’ve also signed up for a calligraphy course in March, so stay tuned for a blog post about that as well. Last year, I took some Clickin Moms courses and attending Shutterfest in St. Louis. Continuing my education in the slow season is going to be a fixture in my business for a long time.
