When you are preparing for your family session, it can be easy to get onto Pinterest or my blog and start looking for photos you HAVE to have. And I’d like to think I have you covered with this list of 5 must have photos from your family session. 

Now, this list is not actually saying “HEY! Duplicate these photos!” But, it’s more to give you an idea of the types of groupings and photos I’ll be taking during your session. Recreating an image you see on Pinterest or even another blog post is always going to be difficult, because (unless you’re the people who are in the photo – Hey, return clients!) nothing will actually BE the same. If it’s a photo we take every year, then yes, we do that for fun. But, pulling out your phone and saying, “hey we want this exact pose with these exact outfits” just won’t feel natural because it isn’t YOU. 

I hope you’re coming to me ready to create your own memories with your own incredible family, wearing outfits you love and feel confident in, and to have so much fun together! That’s the experience I love to give my clients! So without further ado…

5 must have photos from your family session

1. A photo of everyone smiling at the camera. Or as close to it as we can get. I like to start with photos of the whole family and make sure to knock this classic out before we get going with the more fun ones with movement and interaction. It always seems to be the one everyone wants for their Christmas card and that grandparents want to frame. 
2. Photos of you and your spouse/partner. When was the last time you guys took some photos of just you two that wasn’t a selfie? I love to go through a quick couples posing workflow and get you guys a variety of images of the two of you. This family wouldn’t be a thing if it wasn’t for you. 
3. Individuals of each of the kids. These are so amazing to have as they get older, and I love letting each of them shine!
4. Sibling photos. I love to get all the siblings together for some photos, and then do one set of siblings with mom, and one set of siblings with dad. 
5. Mom and dad with each kid individually. This may sound weird, but when you had your first kid, all your photos were just you guys and your one child. I like to make sure to do that with the younger siblings too (so if you have three kids, this is three separate photos.) And I just think it’s nice that each kid gets to be the center of attention with mom and dad for a beat. 🙂
