The Story of Us: Wedding dress shopping and suit measuring

On our checklist this month was finding and ordering wedding attire. For me, that involved wedding dress shopping, and for Justin that meant getting all of his measurements for his suit. We’ve each had a pretty good idea of the type of attire we’d like on that day, although I’ve been much more secretive about mine. 🙂

I should preface all this by saying that trying on clothes is my least favorite activity, and I let Mom and Karley know that repeatedly. And, when you look at the wedding dresses on the hanger, they look much different from how they look on, so it was hard to just pick them out based on pulling them off the rack.

Wedding dress shopping

On Saturday, Mom, Karley and I went wedding dress shopping. The morning was a calamity of forgetfulness as I called and/or text Justin multiple times about the various things I had left at the house. I was already on the interstate and turning around would mean being late for my first appointment.

We went to David’s Bridal in Independence first. Our consultant, Mary, was very helpful, but they didn’t really have what I was looking for. They matched the basic description, but when I tried them on, I just didn’t feel like they were right. Mom only cried once Mary had me in some heels, with a veil and headband. Karley said I looked like a bride. The dress was nice, but that was it. It was nice. I wasn’t in love with it.

After fueling up with more coffee, and finding Belle Vogue in Overland Park, we looked around while we waited for my next appointment. Chaska was our consultant, and she was amazing. She was very laid back and let us have our space while I tried on the dresses.

I may have had one minor panic attack when Karley couldn’t get me out of a dress fast enough. And there may have been an incident when my elbow met Karley’s temple as she helped get me out of another dress. She was a trooper, though, and laughed it off.

While we were in the dressing room, I pointed to a dress and told Karley I wanted to try it on last because it was my favorite out of all the ones we had brought in with us. And it’s still my favorite. It’s the dress I am going to marry Justin in, and I couldn’t be happier about that.

Suit measuring

Justin picked out the suit he wanted last October or November, we have just been waiting to order it until closer to the big day. However, we’ve realized we need his suit in order to pick out the best options for all the guys.

The suit is going to be custom-made, so we have to get all of his measurements to send off when we order it. It’s an investment that can be worn more than once, which is awesome. That is the reason we are doing suits instead of renting tuxedos. It’s about the same for the guys, and this way they get to keep something in exchange for the money they spent.

Without giving too much away, just know that it is going to be the perfect fall suit, and I am so excited to see him in it. 🙂

Wedding attire

Wedding attire — that’s what our checklist had for us this month. I think it’s safe to say we knocked that one out of the ballpark, and it’s on the next. 🙂

Wedding dress shopping isn’t really like anything else I’ve ever experienced. It’s such an odd mix of emotions as you’re in and out of various dresses trying to think about something that is 8 months away. (241 days to be exact) I was so happy that I had my mom and Karley with me. We had an amazing time, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
