How often have you had family photos taken? As we were growing up, professional photos were usually the church directory photos or large, extended family photos with breakouts of each individual family. Sure, we have all kinds of photos of the four of us at family weddings and events, games, horse shows… But annual family photos just weren’t a thing when I was younger.
But the times have changed, so let me tell you why annual photos should be important now:
1 . You are able to create your legacy. Having prints and albums of your family photos year after year creates a tangible history of your family that you can look through time and again. You get to relive how you were feeling during that season and in those moments.
2. Family photos are important to your children’s self esteem and sense of self.
David Krauss, a licensed psychologist from Cleveland, Ohio says “My bias is very simple. I think they (family photographs) should be on the wall … I am very conservative about self-esteem and I think placing a family photo someplace in the home where the child can see it every day without having to turn on a device or click around on a computer to find it really hits home for that child this sense of reassurance and comfort. They have a certainty about them and a protecting quality that nurtures a child. It lets them know where they are in the pecking order and that they are loved and cared for,”
Krauss also suggests placing photographs of that child with their family in the child’s bedroom so that can be among the last things they see before sleep and the first thing they may see before beginning their day. He says it lets them know they are loved and important.
3. Digital photos have made finding a professional photographer that can fit multiple budgets widely available. But just remember, you get what you pay for so don’t go expecting José Villa level work with dollar store prices. Research what you want from your photographer. How many pictures do they include? Digital gallery delivery or do you buy prints from them? Or both? How are the photos delivered? What is the experience like with them?
We started taking annual photos after we were married. So every year in October since 2017 we’ve had our pictures taken, even when it was just the two of us. And, I am so happy to continue that tradition now that we are a family of three.
