Favorite five things about Street Fair

The week and weekend after Labor Day is always the week of Street Fair in Concordia. Wednesday kicks off the fair with a parade for the kiddos, and there is a washers tournament in the beer garden. This will be the third year that I have lived in Concordia for Street Fair, and I thought it would be the perfect topic for this week’s favorite five.

1. Taking Squirt to the carnival

Since I moved to Concordia to live with Justin, my dad and I have taken Squirt to the carnival on Main Street. Karley’s work schedule usually had her working evenings, but I am so excited that this year, she will be able to come as well! He loves the giant slide and the ferris wheel because we can ride with him. Last year, two of his cousins (pictured above) were able to go, so he had someone to ride all the other rides with him. I LOVE watching the joy on their faces as they enjoy the carnival. 🙂

2. Heidelberg Garden

The beer garden is always a great time. Everyone gets together, shares pitchers, roams about to talk to people they haven’t seen in forever. It’s set up in Central Park right off of Main Street. There are picnic tables, a giant maypole, string lights, and there’s just something about drinking beer outside that is so enjoyable. The weather is usually great, as it starts to cool off in the evening. It’s like it symbolizes the start of fall.

3. The way the whole town seems to celebrate

There are parades most nights, but not the same parade each night. A kid’s parade, one that is definitely more adult, and then Saturday’s parade is more traditional. There are booths and stands, businesses with special deals or longer hours. All of Main Street is closed down, but it never seems like an inconvenience. It’s usually a really great week. 🙂

4.The giant corndogs

This is real. I have been talking about this for probably a week at this point. They are the amazing, hand-dipped, foot-long corndogs that are always on the south side of Main Street. They are delicious.

5. And oddly enough, the Top Hats

This one can be somewhat alarming if you aren’t prepared. I was not at all aware of the Top Hats before my first Street Fair, and to watch a bunch of grown men dance by, shirtless, with their stomachs panted and trash cans as top hats being held up was startling. I don’t have a picture of this, but I hope this at least gives you some kind of idea.
