3 reasons to have a first look on your wedding day | Kansas City Missouri Wedding Photographer

Today, I’m sharing 3 reasons to have a first look on your wedding day! One of the biggest questions I get from clients is, “Is a first look on our wedding day necessary?” That’s a totally valid question! And it is totally up to your personal preference. Some people want a more traditional day and others are interested in the timeline benefits + so much more.  Does this sound like you? I’m here to help!!

Actually spend your wedding day together

This was a big one for Justin and I. It’s your wedding day, shouldn’t you get more than a few hours together?! Most ceremonies are in the evening, and by having a first look in the early afternoon you get to spend so much more time together.

So run it down with me: You go to your first look. You get to have that time together and you let me know when you’re ready to start portraits. You get to talk to each other, tell each other how great you look, hug each other, and then spend the rest of the day together with all your favorite people. You get time to just BE together.

Now, if you opt to wait for the aisle, (as is your choice!), you don’t get to speak to each other until after the ceremony, and then we are in a time crunch to get all the portraits done before the sunsets and the beginning of the reception. And once you’re at the reception you’re busy talking with all your guests. You don’t really get any time for just the two of you.

More bride + groom portraits

When we do a first look and then take care of all of your must-have portraits, we get to be more creative after the ceremony and capture some fun, glowy sunset portraits. There are two time slots during the day when we do bride and groom portraits – and you get so much more variety! This in part because we have all of our must-haves + a location change means we have an opportunity to take some really fun, creative portraits of the two of you.

Get to your celebration sooner

This is another one I love to tell clients about – you get to your reception sooner when we do a first look. I am there to capture it all, and will do just that with or without a first look. However, when we have a first look we don’t need nearly as much time between the ceremony and the reception grand entrance to get all the portraits done. I even have some couples who want to knock out family formals before the ceremony so that after they say “I do!” we slip out for a few just married portraits and then they are celebrating!!
