The Adventures of JI & Kels – Three days in Venice

Venice is gorgeous, you guys. There are no cars, bikes, skateboards, scooters … Everyone walks everywhere. The alleyways between building vary in size, and there are so many ways to get to the same place. We had so much fun just wandering around and exploring while we were in Venice. Read on for our last three days of our honeymoon. ๐Ÿ™‚

Day one

The water taxi from the train station to our hotel was amazing! We were able to be dropped off close to our hotel with just a quick walk to get there. The canal outside of our hotel was too narrow for the taxi, so we had to get off near the square and walk over. There are 118 islands that make up Venice, and each island has a square with a church and usually a restaurant on it.

After check-in, we wandered around the city for awhile … and managed to get lost. There was some confusion with Google maps and the street names we could see, but we eventually found our way. In our defense, it was through some really tiny alleys and then a tunnel the opened up right by our hotel. Our evening concluded with a low-key dinner, and early to bed.

Day two

On this morning we had a walking tour of the Doge’s Palace and around Venice. We ran into the couple we met in Florence who was also on their honeymoon. Small world! We went through the palace, over the Bridge of Sighs (formally the Bridge of Prisons since it was the way prisoners were taken to the jail), through the jail and back across the bridge. I had no idea that Venice used to be an empire that lasted longer than the Roman empire before this tour! Venice has only been a part of Italy as we know if for 150 years.

We walked along, exploring different alley ways and squares, hitting up some of the more touristy parts of Venice. It was so foggy during that morning. It made taking some photos a bit tricky, but it gave the city the almost sleepy feel to it. Like it just didn’t want to wake up yet.

After lunch and a little break, the afternoon was spent exploring, like most of our time on our honeymoon. I just couldn’t get enough. We weren’t even sure what we were looking for half the time, just that we didn’t want to waste too much time in the hotel room.

Day three

This afternoon we had another walking tour, but this was “Discover Venice” and went more into the local areas versus the tourist attractions. The architecture here is incredible. I loved walking through the allies, crossing canals and everything in between. Our guide mentioned that the building access from the alleys was actually the back door. The canals were considered the streets, and the more decorative “front” of the buildings face the canals.

We ended the tour with a 30-minute gondola ride, and it was amazing! Through the canals in the city, out onto the grand canal and back – we loved getting to see the city from the water. This was my favorite part of our time in this city.

We decided to have a “fancy dinner” while we were on our honeymoon, so we packed accordingly. On our last night in Italy, we dressed up more than normal and went out for a night on the town. Finding a place we both wanted to eat was tricky however. The places that were close were typically way overpriced, and the “fancy” restaurants menu’s were not very appealing. We eventually found a place that we agreed upon, and had a great time! Our waiter was hilarious and very kind. He made us laugh, and as we were paying, brought out some limoncello for us to try on the house.

The next morning, we were escorted by water taxi to the Venice Airport and began the long day of traveling back home. It was such an amazing trip, and I am so thankful and grateful we were able to go.
