Marriage, love languages and why it’s important to be open with each other

When we took our vows, we knew it was forever. We were committed to building our lives together, growing old together and everything in between. While preparing for our wedding we asked for marriage advice. Communication was the one thing everyone agreed on. In light of that, we talk to each other about everything, all the time. (And me usually more than him because I can be quite a Chatty Cathy.) But, that is not the only pillar of our relationship. Have you heard of The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman? They are words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, physical touch. The concept is that not everyone expresses and receives love in the same ways.

I remember scoffing the first time I heard about love languages. Love languages? You love someone and that’s that. But, oh how wrong I was. This has been a big part of our marriage. We are making sure we are loving each other in the best way possible. If you thrive on words of affirmation, but your significant other shows love with acts of service there could be a disconnect. Even though they are showing you they love you the best way they know how, you may not feel it the same way you would if they were speaking your love language.

The website is super helpful, and there’s a quiz you can take to help determine your love language and your partner’s love language. The best thing to remember is that there are no wrong answers on the quiz, and there is no wrong way to receive love.

So, back to what I said at the beginning – we are committed to building our lives together, growing old together and everything in between. And knowing how the other receives love is so important when accomplishing that. Love languages are important for that.
