Early in September, I was able to be a part of my first birth photography experience. It was absolutely amazing! I loved being able to capture those memories for the Soendkers.
They went into the hospital early in the wee hours of a Tuesday morning. Most of the day was spent anxiously awaiting their little girl’s arrival.
After many hours of waiting, and a small adjustment to the epidural, Mallory’s contractions began in earnest. Around five that evening, it was time. Mallory’s husband, Cory, and her mother, Kris, were in the delivery room with her.
A little over an hour later, that sweet little girl came into the world with a head full of hair and was looked on with eyes full of love.
The 7-pound 7-ounce, bundle of joy was weighed, measured and then checked over by the amazing nurses that were present.
Cory may have played “We are the Champions” while the doctors finished looking their little girl over, and it was adorable.
The doctor and nurses recommended skin-to-skin contact for Mallory and her sweet baby girl to bond. I stepped out for around an hour to hunt down some dinner and allow the Soendkers some alone time with their daughter.
When I returned, the family came into the delivery room to catch their first peak of the blond-headed baby. Mallory’s grandma kept insisting the baby had red hair, and so desperately wanted it to be so.
As for a first birth photography experience, it was so incredible to be able to be a part of something so profound. I had never been in a delivery room before, even when my nephew was born. It was amazing to see Cory’s love and support for Mallory. And to see the joy on Kris’ face as she saw her granddaughter for the first time was beautiful. To be able to capture those memories for families is such a humbling experience. To know that little girl will one day be able to look at those pictures and she how loved she has always and will always be is why I loved this experience so much.
As a Concordia, Missouri photographer, I have focused mainly on families and children, but I would love for this to become a larger part of my business. Being present for a birth was an amazing experience.
